Modern-day fishing rods are made sturdy and rugged to fight against the large fishes in the water. So, these rods aren’t going to get broken, most likely. But mishaps happen at times. So, if you find your fishing rod broken somehow, don’t worry.
We will show you how to fix a broken fishing rod in a ‘Snap.’ Yes, we used the word snap because fixing the fishing rod doesn’t take much time once you have the right fishing rod repair kit. You can quickly resolve the damaged part using epoxy and fiberglass. Also, there are other ways of fixing the broken rod with the least hassles.
How to Fix A Broken Fishing Rod
A fishing rod to an angler is like a riffle to a soldier on the battlefield. Both have sentiments attached to them. Thus, anglers don’t usually change their fishing rods. Hence, many anglers look for suggestions on how to fix a broken graphite fishing rod or other rods of its kind.
So, here we present the simple DIY fishing rod fixing tricks.
Things you will require:
- A dowel rods
- Flex coat epoxy kit
- Rod wrap finisher
- Tinfoil
- Utility Knife
- Tin snips
- Superline
- Sandpaper
- Epoxy paste
Once you are ready with the fixing kits, you can follow these steps.
Step 1: Observing the Breaking Point
At first, you might want to insert the dowel rod right at the broken part of the fishing rod. However, you must inspect the damaged part before. You have to identify the damaged length of the rod to select the dowel rod length accordingly.
The actual plan is to fix the rod’s black section with the dowel rod and fit it snuggly using epoxy resin. Many anglers prefer cutting the rod in the broken point and re-fixing the two parts. But it loses the fishing rod length and becomes an eyesore.
Our guidelines will help you fix the damaged rod without losing its actual length.
Step 2: Tapering the Rod
We used a dowel rod because it is made of wood and soaks the epoxy resin greatly. Thus, the entire bonding between the old fishing and the new dowel rod will become stronger and more durable. Inspect the rod and remove the existing fishing line and reel from it.
You then have to line up the blank spot accurately using the splinters. Then, clean the entire setup. After that, you have to wrap the new rod with the existing one properly. Since the dowel rod is slightly heavier, you have to taper it down. You can use sandpaper for sanding the rod to your desired size without any hassle.
Make a mark on the tapered rod using a utility knife. Make sure it has one inch left at the bottom. It would be inserted within the fished rod’s lower part. The dowel rod needs to have a 3-inch length for proper insertion and to fix on the top position.
When you sand the rod, you have to go through several trial-and-error sections. You should continue honing the rod until it fits properly.
When both the top and bottom part of the dowel rod gets the perfect fit, clean the sand dust with a towel or old cloth.
Step 3: Gluing the Two Rods
When you taper the dowel rod, you have to be cautious. Also, check the rod after sanding it for a few seconds. It is essential because if the sanding is too much, you can’t put back the dust. Thus, you will have to pick a new rod and start sanding it from the beginning.
Next, you have to attach the rod accurately using epoxy resin. But first, you should check the fishing rod to know if there’s something inside it that might obstruct the dowel rod. If you find any gravel rock, or debris inside the rod, use tweezers to bring it out of the rod.
After that, insert the top part of the dowel rod inside the fishing rod and fix it with epoxy. You should avoid setting the lower part as it needs great pressure and might further damage the fishing rod. The top part insertion is snug and comfortable too.
Once you have glued the dowel rod with the upper part of the fishing pole, repeat the same at the bottom part of it. Align both parts of the rod accurately using the splinter. Press the adjoining points tightly so that the epoxy sets appropriately there. It will also allow the extra epoxy to come out from the joining points if there’s any.
Step 4: Wrap the Rod’s Super Line
Now, you must smooth out the splinter. Use fine sandpaper to smooth out the joining point. But you should sand the fragment lightly to ensure that you don’t damage the fiberglass during the process. Once the crack area feels smooth, you have to wrap it tightly.
Use a braided super line or tape to wrap the rod in its blank position. The wrapping should be as tight as possible.
Step 5: Coat the Braided Super Line Wrapping
To coat the wrapping, you have to use a flex coat kit. In a small bowl, take 25ml of the flex coating material and mix it with a toothbrush. Then, apply the blended flex coat on the fishing pole with the same toothbrush.
Use a dryer to dry off the flex coating evenly. Finally, you should leave the fishing rod in a secure position for at least 36 hours. It would help the resin and flex coating sit properly.
How to Fix A Broken Fishing Rod Tip?
The fishing rod tip can be of many styles, such as spinning, casting, boat, and fly tops. Firstly, observe which type of rod tip you have. Then, determine the fishing tip ring size accurately. These rings’ regular sizes are about 6mm, 8mm, or 10mm, mostly with the largest being 18mm.
Then, accurately find the tube size. It is measured in fractions. Finally, purchase and replace the tip-top that accurately fits the ring and tube size of the fishing rod. For installation, cut off the silver adhesive over the tip-top using a razor. Then, heat it using a lighter to melt the silver glue. Then, insert the newly brought tip-top inside the tube and ring.
Conclusion
Fixing a broken fishing rod isn’t tricky. Once you follow the steps mentioned above for how to fish a broken fishing rod, you can do it with ease. Also, we have ensured that the fixed fishing rod doesn’t look messy.
Thus, you can continue fishing with your favorite fishing rod by fixing it comfortably. Cheers!
